Catfish Prices in Nigeria: What Drives the Cost
Ask for the price of catfish twice in one year and you may get two very different answers. Prices move, sometimes quickly. Understanding why helps you buy at the right time, from the right supplier, and know whether a price is fair.
Here are the factors that drive the cost, explained from the farm side.
1. Feed is the biggest cost
Feed is the largest single cost in catfish farming. Most quality fish feed relies on imported ingredients, so when the naira weakens or feed prices rise, the cost of raising every kilogram of fish rises with it.
When you see catfish prices climb across the market, feed is usually the reason.
2. Size
Price per kg usually changes with size. Table-size fish of around 1kg are the most common. Larger fish take longer to raise and eat more feed, which affects their price.
Always ask whether a quoted price is for a specific size grade or a mixed batch.
3. Season and supply
Many farms stock and harvest at the same times of year. When lots of farms harvest together, there is plenty of fish and prices soften. In between, supply tightens and prices rise.
Festive periods also push demand up.
4. Live, fresh, frozen or smoked
Each form has a different cost. Smoked catfish loses most of its water weight during smoking, so one kilogram of smoked fish takes several kilograms of fresh fish to produce. That is why smoked catfish costs much more per kg. Live and fresh fish need careful, fast handling.
5. Farm-gate versus market price
Fish bought at a market have usually passed through several hands, and each one adds a margin. Buying direct from the farm removes those steps. You also know exactly when your fish were harvested.
6. How the fish were raised
Water quality, stocking density and the care taken during growing all affect the final fish. Fish raised in good conditions have better flesh and fewer losses. Cheap fish can be cheap for a reason.
