Clarias vs Hybrid Catfish: What's the Difference?
At Udemba Farms we raise two kinds of catfish: Clarias and hybrid. Both are popular across Nigeria, and both come from our earthen ponds. Here is how they differ, so you can choose what suits you.
Clarias catfish
Clarias (Clarias gariepinus) is the African catfish, native to rivers and lakes across Africa, including Nigeria. It is the catfish most Nigerians grew up eating.
- Hardy: it copes well in natural ponds.
- Familiar flavour: the classic catfish taste for pepper soup and traditional dishes.
- Widely in demand: buyers know it and ask for it by name.
Hybrid catfish
Hybrid catfish are produced by crossing Clarias with another African catfish species, usually Heterobranchus. The result, often called Heteroclarias, is raised widely in Nigerian fish farms.
- Fast-growing: hybrids are valued for strong growth.
- Good meat yield: a meaty, well-filled fish.
- Consistent size: useful for buyers who want uniform fish.

How we raise both
Whichever you choose, the way it is raised matters more than the variety. Our Clarias and hybrid catfish grow in the same conditions: natural earthen ponds, fresh Ebonyi River water, and nothing added to the ponds. No lime, no chemicals, no antibiotics, no treatments.
